The Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) is a crucial financial source for victim assistance programs, providing aid to shelters, hotlines, and advocacy services. However, recent reductions in VOCA funding have placed many service providers in a difficult position. In fact, funding has decreased by 40%, creating significant challenges for organizations that depend on these grants. Although the number of victims served per dollar has increased, the growing demand continues to exceed available resources.
Recent Legislative Actions Impacting VOCA:
Good news for VOCA-funded programs! On February 4, 2025, the U.S. House of Representatives acted to temporarily boost deposits into the Crime Victims Fund. This could mean more financial support for many victim assistance organizations, allowing them to keep providing crucial services.
Advocacy Efforts Supporting VOCA:
Strong advocacy has been vital in spotlighting the importance of VOCA funding. We thank Representative Ann Wagner for sponsoring the bill, and Representatives Nathaniel Moran, Jim Costa, Debbie Dingell, Stephanie Bice, and Derek Schmidt for their efforts in tackling the financial issues impacting crime victim support programs.
In addition, many advocacy organizations have been instrumental in raising awareness about VOCA. Groups such as the National Alliance to End Sexual Violence, The National Network to End Domestic Violence, RAINN, and many others have worked tirelessly to push for legislative action that ensures continued funding for victim services.
